Starting class only matters at the beginning of the game, since you can level up your stats however you want. Royalty is  a good starting class for new players since it has strong Magic Stats from the beginning and magic is known to be strong in Demon’s Souls. Magic usage is not limited to a certain number like in Dark Souls but can be simply replenished with an item.

Imagine if, when Bluepoint took out a strange detail, they replaced it with an equally imaginative one. As a substitute for something authentically weird, Bluepoint has created something authentically normal that adheres to the slightly cartoony version of “realism” that video games so often employ. Everything’s a little uglier, a little grimier, a little less visually striking.

This is likely a welcome change as telling whether you were in pure black or just before it could be challenging back in the original, but for many the UI may feel somewhat off. It’s hard to describe, but the “You Died” screens are missing “something” and the overall UI seems too clean and lacking the “grunge” look we have come to expect from souls games. On the flip side, other players can invade your game as phantoms, enabling a PvP element and ratcheting up the difficulty another notch. Although, again, beating an invader inspires such a feeling of achievement and mastery it’s at least equivalent to beating one of the game’s infamously challenging bosses. There are multiple different types of weapons, and the ability to hold swords double-handed, but the nuance of the combat is not in the controls but in how you approach the game and its enemies. Most of how you play the game is dictated by a stamina meter that determines how much you can run, swing your sword, or block incoming blows.

The strongest in terms of regular damage amongst the normal sword of the game is the Knight Sword. The reach is much longer than the Short Sword and it is even longer than the Long Sword. Like the Long Sword, the Knight Sword’s attacks are predictable and easily parried. But beyond this, Demon’s Souls Remake changes very little from the original in the way of mechanics, only adding a few quality of life improvements here and there, without compromising the intensity of Demon’s Souls.

Demon’s Souls may be the game that kicked off the Souls subgenre of action-RPGs, but it is the ways in which it’s different from the Dark Souls games that really make it stand out. The biggest is that rather than being one contiguous open world, Demon’s Souls is split into five isolated worlds, each made up of three to four sublevels, each offering their own unique rewards and challenges. The thing I love so much about this structure is how easy it becomes to just pack up, leave, and try out a new area if you find yourself struggling in the one you’re currently in. Each level is difficult, but in very different ways, and never for reasons as simple or as boring as the enemies simply just being stronger.

In order to properly brave the harsh world of Demon’s Souls, there are a ton of armor sets in the game you can utilize to make your journey just a tad smoother. The PlayStation 5 version launched with different modes to accommodate various displays and playstyles. For players more interested in the visuals and willing to trade a few frames for combat, the cinematic mode is perfect with a fixed 4K resolution and 30 FPS. Meanwhile, the performance mode can run the game smoothly at 60 FPS with 4K resolution.
