Donkey Kong’s world has been threatened by a sinister bunch of apes, after a large meteor knocks a mining company deep into the planet’s core. The adventure involves diving down into those sublevels — it’s Donkey Kong Hollow Earth, or Journey to the Center of the Kongiverse. The big difference in this game is that you can destroy just about anything, burrowing and tunneling throughout the game’s large 3D maps. I’m happy to say that Donkey Kong Bananza is here to whisk you off to multilevel worlds of satisfyingly smashing madness, to cheer you up and give you an excuse to punch the heck out of things.

It’s worth it, even if it does have the odd side effect of making the entire map feel smaller, especially cities and dungeons that can now be fully explored in about half the time. This change has also made me care a whole lot more about investing in skills and magical buffs that increase my stamina, since now I’m using that meter for nearly everything I do. But despite the extra fiddling that causes, moving quickly through areas I already know like the back of my hand makes for a remarkably less tedious time. Enemies are also plentiful in Avowed, but thankfully, combat is as fun as it is fluid.

Sure, there’s plenty of fun chatter to be had around the campfire with your companions, but it’s the seemingly smaller narrative choices that make it stand out. The books and letters housed by Eora’s most out-of-sight nooks and crannies exemplify as much. So much so, in fact, that I lost literal hours searching for and reading collections of in-game diaries, documents, novellas, you name it (The Soul Unbound, I’m looking at you). But Avowed isn’t just a first-person action game, and after a while the artifice of its RPG systems started to show.
